Patchwork - Dancing Lady

Hi all, hope all of you doing great.

This is one of my favorite piece of artwork. This is a dancing lady pattern of large wall hanging or home decor. Here, we can see a combination of two types of art hand embroidery with patchwork. At first, embroidery is done on specific colored cloth. Let us take for example such as face on skin color fabric etc. Afterwards, all those patches fixed together on a piece of cotton fabric by simple hand stitching. Later stitched them firmly by machine.

For the whole design, silk thread is used. You can observe a variety of stitches are used in this piece of art. Such as

  • Stem stitch for all the outlines
  • Wheel buttonhole in pieces of jewellery like the long necklace
  • Herringbone used for flowers on sari, short necklace
  • Satin stitch for bangles
  • Long and short for hairs, eyes lips etc.

Hope you liked the work. We have a few more similar patterns. I will publish them in my upcoming posts

Kasuti – The Folk Art

Indian Subcontinent homes many art forms like sculpture,  paintings and textile arts like embroidery and woven works and so on. The different forms of embroidery are  Kashmiri Kashida, Phulkari of Punjabi, Lucknowi Chikenkari, Kutch work, Kantha work, Kasuti work and Gota work and so on. Kasuti is the conventional form of hand embroidery practised in the rural areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Kasuti is done on traditional handwoven sarees like Ilkal, Dharwad sarees. Nowadays work is done on Kanchipuram and Mysore silk sarees too. Gradually this rural art is becoming a trend by appearing on Kurtis and tops.

Kasuti is done by counting threads of the fabric and generally, a single thread is used for embroidery.  Dark shades are best suited for the work. Gavanti, Murgi, Menthi are the name of the stitches of Kasuti. Some popular design patterns are chariots, Lamps, elephant, peacock etc are in geometrical shapes.

Table Cloth – For kids

Amma always tries to do something creative and here is one example. This is a very old project, a table cloth for kids.

Different patches of cartoons done with simple Stem stitch or Outline stitchThese are pictures depicting different professions and Donald duck cartoons.

No other stitches or colours are used here.  To give a perfect finish to those tiny details like eyes, hairs or shoes you need expertise in stem stitch. Amma managed this effortlessly.

Then she Sewed those patches on a large cloth and bordered with black lace. The beautiful table cloth for kids is ready.  You may do this with patches of different colours, even may try different colours threads.

If you like the work, please convey your opinion in comment section.

Embroidered Bed Sheet With Buttonhole Stitch

Hi all , How are you ?

This time we wanted one hand-embroidered bed cover. We bought this cotton light blue bedsheet. Using tracing paper and carbon paper we printed this floral design, all over the bedsheet with equal distance. The process was a little lengthy and time taking.

But once the tracing work is over we decided to use buttonhole stitch with four stands of silk thread.

We decided to do only outline instead of filling the whole design. That’s why the stitching was finished so quick. Open chain-Chain stitch is used for stems. It is very easy you can also try one. This design suits for a table cloth as well.

With fresh colours like Pink, Purple and olive green, it looks really pretty cool isn’t it?

Table Cloth, With Buttonhole Stitch

  Hi all,
I am an art enthusiast and inherited this quality from my Amma. Through this blog, I am presenting all the hand embroidery work done by her. Let the world see her talent. I also assisted her in a few of her works.

This is a hand Embroidered Table Cloth. We wanted one small table cloth for our round center tea-poi. And we wanted to finish it soon. So we chose this particular floral design and filled it with buttonhole stitch. Buttonhole stitch which is also called ad Blanket. This stitch is a best suited stitch used for filling. We used Stem stitch for the outline of the flowers. Those green lines are made out of Twisted Chain Stitch. Silk thread is used for the whole artwork. I have also plan to add a tutorial to the blog.

Hope you all like the work, let me know your opinion through comments.

note: The tread itself has shading, so we can see light and dark shades in the work.
